As many as 9,000 fans could attend the fight night between the two Auckland-born, WBO-ranked heavyweights.

The big all-New Zealand clash between heavyweights Joseph Parker and Junior Fa has been confirmed for Friday, Dec. 11, live on DAZN.

Former WBO champion Parker (27-2, 21 KOs) and the undefeated Fa (19-0, 10 KOs) are ranked third and sixth in the WBO rankings, respectively, and the winner of their fight at the Spark Arena in Auckland will stand a good chance of earning a shot in 2021.

Parker and Fa went head-to-head during the amateurs, claiming two wins apiece. And this fight — perhaps the biggest in the history of New Zealand boxing — is set to be a high-stakes rubber match.

Kiwi boxing star David Nyika has already begun a war of words with opponent Jessie Maio ahead of his professional debut on the Joseph Parker-Junior Fa undercard on February 27.

The two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist is confident of an early round knockout of Maio, a West Auckland retail manager and security guard.

“We asked some very credible boxers to fight and we offered them good money,” Nyika said.

“I hope they’re paying him well because I wouldn’t want to fight me on my pro debut either.

“I’ll be ready to go six [rounds], but if it only goes one, it only goes one.”

Maio had an unusual start to his 3-0 career, after being persuaded to take up the sport by top boxing coach Issac Peach when the two got into a fistfight during a rugby league game.

“We had a bit of a punch up out there and he sort of made mention as we got sent off like, ‘Oh, you know, you can actually punch,’” Maio said.

Fellow Peach boxer Jerome Pampellone is also on the undercard.

The David Haye look-a-like is a three-time national light heavyweight champion and even went close to upsetting Nyika late last year.

“He’s got so much potential, I don’t think he’s even reached his peak yet,” Nyika said of Pampellone.

While the two friends would be in separate fights this time around, Peach believed a matchup in the future was a possibility.

“One day if they can both earn millions of dollars, they can fight each other.

“But at the moment New Zealand should just get behind both of them.”

Joseph Parker is predicting a knockout when he takes on Junior Fa in an all Kiwi heavyweight clash on February 27, but won’t speculate on what round it will happen in.

Parker took a short break from his preparation on Friday, to spar with Luna Rossa co-helmsman Jimmy Spithill, to help promote the fight.

There was no clear winner in that contest, but the 29-year-old is looking for a definitive result when he takes on Fa at Spark Arena.

Parker is the red hot favorite to win the fight and says he’s expecting Fa to hit the canvas at some point.

“I know what I can do. I’m not one of those guys who can predict what’s going to happen, but I know if I go in there, let my hands go and throw combinations, that I can do a lot of damage and he’s going to be on the receiving end of that.”

The former WBO heavyweight champion of the world has an impressive 27-2 record, but he’ll be putting his reputation and future earning potential on the line when he steps into the ring against Fa.

It will be the first time he’ll have fought a Kiwi since he defeated Afa Tatupu at Trusts Arena in 2013 and it’s not just because of that which gives this fight a unique feel.

“This fight feels different in the sense that it wasn’t really a fight we were looking at,” Parker said.

“But with everything that happened with Covid, it was the only option.
